One Year of Cherry Tree Crossing Demolition

AUGUSTA, GA (Anibal Ibarra) - First their homes were demolished and today they were evicted from the list of registered voters. The Richmond County Board of Elections (RCBOE) voted to take 496 names from the official list of electors. None of them took part of the last attempt made by the board to avoid the action during a public hearing. They must register to vote again with their new addresses. In a county were voter participation is scare during election time, every voter literally count for any candidate running for office. A few dozen voters can make the difference to win a race. The RCBOE will continue trying to reach out those 496 electors to register again and the board is counting on the help of the media, family members and friends of those who once upon a time lived in Cherry Tree Crossing or Greens on Savannah.

Background Reported by RCBOE

Cherry Tree Crossing Apartments

June 2013 - Identified 513 voters who were registered to vote.

July 2013 - met with Augusta Housing Authority seeking their cooperation in including a Voter Registration Application as part of their relocation packets for residents. This practice was immediately put into effect.

July 2013 - mailed letters and a voter registration application to all registered voters seeking updated addresses. The majority of these letters were returned as non-deliverable, which automatically triggers the generation of a confirmation notice. The confirmation notice would have sent within 2-3 weeks of having received the returned mail from the voter.

September 2013 - residents began relocating from apartments.

Early 2014 - demolition began on some buildings.

2014 Primary - marked the voter’s list for Advance Voting and Election Day Voting so that poll workers would be notified when individuals attempted to vote. Voters were asked to update their address at the time of voting.

July 2014 - demolition is completed on remaining buildings.

2014 General - marked the voter’s list for Advance Voting and Election Day Voting so that poll workers would be notified when individuals attempted to vote. At this time, the buildings were demolished. Voters were asked to vote a provisional ballot.
