150TH Anniversary of Juneteenth

ATLANTA, GA (PR) - "We cannot change history or alter the wrongdoings of those that came before us  but we can endeavor to work together for the betterment of all mankind," said Georgia Republican Party Chairman John Padgett.  "The Republican Party was founded by abolitionists seeking to end the proliferation of slavery.  Now, the Party works tirelessly to protect freedom, promote growth, and preserve hope for generations to come."

One hundred and fifty years ago today, news of Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation spread to Texas where 250,000 African Americans were still enslaved. To celebrate Juneteenth, which marks the official abolition of slavery in the United States, the Georgia Republican Party issued a statement, adding:

"Today we gather in communities throughout Georgia to reflect on the past and celebrate America's bright future," said Leo Smith, Director of Minority Engagement for the Georgia Republican Party.  "While much has changed in the last one hundred and fifty years, our Party's commitment to freedom and opportunity for all Americans - regardless of race, color, or class - is stronger than ever."

Prayers for Charleston

Nine people - including State Senator Clementa Pinckney (D-45) - were gunned down at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.  In response to this horrific crime, Georgia Republican Party Chairman John Padgett issued the following statement:

"Words cannot explain last night's tragedy, calm those devastated by violence, or express our deepest condolences," said Chairman John Padgett.  "So we pray for our neighbors in Charleston, South Carolina and ask God to bring them peace, comfort, and strength during this dark time of mourning."
