(No recommendation from Public Services Committee May 26, 2015)

{A Last Minute Compromise to Contradict Previous Vote?

The Augusta Richmond County Commission approved an Ordinance to be exempt from the Augusta Historic Preservation Ordinance, that means the city in order to remove city owned projects must be reviewed by Historic Augusta, adamantly opposed to it.

The Historic Augusta not only opposed to the exempt from the Augusta Historic Preservation Ordinance but to the demolition of the 1869 Jewish Synagogue/Temple and the 1860s Courthouse Annex, both on Telfair Street.

Historic Augusta wanted the city to adhere to the agreement from 2013 that will save the buildings, and only remove the additions to the courthouse annex.

Mr. Jack Steinberg is organizing a group to establish a Jewish museum in the temple, and possibly can use the courthouse annex as well. Historic Augusta is pushing for an overall master plan for the Municipal Building block, which was agreed upon in 2013, but no action was taken since then.

Item 10 was approved by consensus. With that action the Commission was free to demolish both building.

Since Historic Augusta opposed Item 10 and Item 30, probably was some last minute compromise and in order to keep happy Historic Augusta 6 Commissioners voted to keep the buildings.

The whole idea behind Item 10 was for the city to have the legal tool to ignore its own ordinance , regarding demolishing historic buildings, to be able to remodel the city building. After having the tool on the table 6 Commissioners decided to ignore their previous vote.

The contradicting vote such as Item 10 against Item 30 is a norm in almost every session of the Commission.

Will Historic Augusta challenge the approval of Item 10?

Statement From the Group:

"We are delighted to announce that at today's Augusta Commission meeting, commissioners voted to save BOTH the 1869 Synagogue and the 1861 Court of Ordinary for use as a new Jewish Museum! The vote of 8-2 was met with a round of applause from those in attendance.

The Augusta Historic Preservation Ordinance was amended, bringing it in line with the Georgia Historic Preservation Act, which specifies that although cities are exempt from their own ordinance, they do have to give the Historic Preservation Commission 45 days to comment on city-owned properties that would otherwise have to come before the Preservation Commission.

THANK YOU to everyone who attended commission meetings, signed this petition, made phone calls to commissioners, and talked about historic preservation around town."

Why wasting the legal department and other city employees time writing an ordinance that ultimately will be defeated the next minute?

Meanwhile, the people responsible of the debacle, such as former city Administrator Fred Russell, are no longer to respond why nobody saw both buildings, during planning the renovation of the Municipal Palace, and others still in office are not being questioned.}
