AUGUSTA, GA (PR) - The Augusta Port Authority has arranged to lower the Savannah River's pool level in Augusta October 7-9 to accommodate annual herbicide treatments to control hydrilla and other invasive weeds.
The areas to be treated will extend from the Waters Edge development to the I-520 bridge. Those shallow areas are thick with weeds and will include the primary treatment areas.
Although the chemicals are not harmful to fish or humans, officials advise against swimming in the treated areas during the applications and for two days afterwards. River water should not be used for irrigation during that period either, the Port Authority advisory said.
As a precaution, the Augusta Utilities Department will also shut down its raw water intake for the Tobacco Road treatment facility during the herbicide applications. Pumping will resume several days later, and stored water will be used in the interim.
