Climate Rally in Atlanta

Environmentalists Rally in Support of EPA

ATLANTA, GA (PR) - UPDATE: As the result of a large scale power outage at the Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center, Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has decided to move the July 29 and 30, 2014, Atlanta Clean Power Plan public hearings to the nearby Omni Hotel.

The hearing dates and times have not changed. The hearings will be held on July 29-30 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., EST. The new location is adjacent to the CNN Center subway (MARTA) stop, and a short walk from the Sam Nunn Atlanta Federal Center. Parking is available at and around the hotel. EPA staff will be on hand at the SNAFC to direct attendees to the new hearing venue.

From the activists themselves:

"This past week has been an exciting and inspiring one. Over 700 people--coming from all over the southeast U.S. and throughout the state--prayed, rallied, played, marched, and testified together in downtown Atlanta to send a powerful message to the EPA on the first day of it's public Clean Power Plan hearings.

Over the course of two days, 248 civil rights leaders, health professionals, first responders, clean energy business-people, laborers, mothers, fathers, miners, and young people shared public witness in support of a strong standard to reduce dangerous carbon pollution. Only 83 people testified against the plan.

We worked with partners from Greenlaw, Environment Georgia, the Climate Action Coalition, the National Wildlife Federation, the American Lung Association and many others to host a morning press conference that featured 200 concerned citizens, Civil Rights veteran Rev. Gerald Durley, NAACP-GA President Francys Johnson, NobelPeace Prize winner and Tennessee Vally Authority board member Marilyn Brown, Atlanta fire chief Kelvin Cochran speaking for Mayor Kasim Reed, League of Women Voters national president Elisabeth Macnamara, Business Forward national president Jim Doyle, and environmentalists Laura Turner Seydel and our very own Mary Anne Hitt, Director of the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal Campaign.

Mary Anne lead the powerful march through the business and legal district of Atlanta, alongside Georgia State Rep. "Able" Mable Thomas, Rev. Gerald Durley, Louisville city councilwoman Attica Scott, Atlanta city councilman Kwanza Hall, Garry Harris of the Emerald Cities Collaborative, leaders from Jobs with Justice, SCLC, the Moral Monday Movement and many more.

It was a powerful moment to see so many people taking to our southern streets demanding clean air for our kids, clean energy for our workforce, and climate action now. These new rules will continue to clean up our air, create jobs and strengthen our economy while stabilizing our climate for future generations!"

Original Announcement

Sierra Club, and other climate and clean energy activists will rally and march to Environmental Protection Agency headquarters July 29 at Noon from the Woodruff Park Atlanta.
Hearing on carbon limits for power plants will take place on Wednesday July 30, 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.

On June 2nd, President Obama and the EPA introduced, for the first time, a plan to limit of carbon pollution from coal-fired power plants. This national climate action is the best chance we have to slow climate disruption! Now, we need to show a massive demonstration of support for climate action at the EPA's hearings on the new standard.

This is shaping up to be the biggest climate fight in history. Fossil fuel billionaires, like the Koch brothers, are bankrolling ads to make President Obama and the EPA think that Americans are afraid of tackling the climate crisis.

You can help make sure that the EPA and Big Coal both know that there's widespread support for national action to fight climate disruption by attending the rally!
