AUGUSTA, GA (Al Dallas) - Mayor Deke Copenhaver will announce on April 21, 2014, the celebration of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program’s 40th Anniversary and Fair Housing Month Celebration. The Mayor will begin the celebration by reading the Proclamation on Monday, April 21, 2014 in the Lee Beard Commission Chamber at 10:00 a.m.
This year marks the 40th Anniversary for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. This program’s main purpose is to provide decent, safe and sanitary housing, a suitable living environment and economic opportunities to low- and moderate-income people. CDBG remains to be the principal source of revenue for localities to utilize in devising flexible solutions to prevent physical, economic, and social deterioration in low-income neighborhoods and communities throughout the nation.
We also celebrate the anniversary of the passing of the Fair Housing Act and recommit to the goal which inspired us in the aftermath of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s assassination in 1968; to eliminate housing discrimination and create equal opportunity in every community. Our commitment to fair housing is a living commitment, one that reflects the needs of America today and prepares us for a future of true integration.
On Wednesday, April 23, 2014, Augusta Housing & Community Development (AHCD) will host a Community Development Awareness Fair at the Julian Smith Casino from 10 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. to highlight organizations that provide services to the citizens of the CSRA. On Thursday, April 24, 2014, AHCDD will host a celebration luncheon in observance of CDBG week and Fair Housing month at the Boathouse Community Center with Ms. Gail Williams, Executive Director of Metro Fair Housing Atlanta as the guest speaker.
