AUGUSTA, GA (Al Dallas) - The technology sector is becoming an increasingly-present part of Augusta’s culture. The Westobou Festival “puts a spotlight on the Central Savannah River Area through a celebration of national and international talent.” Technology is being included with Westobou’s core disciplines which already include film, music, visual, dance and words.
In 2012, seven teams of entry level computer scientists competed in Rural Sourcing, Inc.’s Inaugural RSI Westobou Hackathon. These teams of young professionals created and presented mobile websites showcasing Augusta’s historic landmarks. The hackathon was a huge success and played a part in highlighting Augusta’s technology talent.
Rural Sourcing Inc. has once again teamed with the City of Augusta to present the 2013 RSI Westobou Hackathon on October 4th, 2013 at the historic Enterprise Mill Event Center. Overwhelming response from local college students has already tripled this year’s number of registered participants. Participants will be given four hours to exercise their creative skills to develop a mobile website. Mayor Deke Copenhaver along with Rural Sourcing Inc.’s Vice President, Ingrid Miller and Center Director, Scott Monnig will introduce the project requirements and kick off the event at 1:00 PM. They, along with local technology experts, will evaluate the presentations of the mobile websites developed during the hackathon. The winning team will have the opportunity to complete the website during a winter break internship at RSI.

We are at a very exciting point in Augusta’s history as I believe we are truly witnessing the rise of the creative class in our city. Opportunities like this give technology students a chance to gain resume-worthy experience. Students are also encouraged to network with other aspiring computer scientists and key players in the technology industry. In addition to building resumes, the RSI Westobou Hackathon will help further Augusta’s reputation as the leading technology center in the Southeast.
