The Rise and Fall of Sheriff Salaries

Columbia County’s sheriff will become the county’s highest-paid elected official if commissioners approve a proposal up for review next week, reports The Augusta Chronicle.
A change in the base salary for the office will give Sheriff Clay Whittle an increase of $16,530 per year, raising his total compensation to $135,760.

Columbia County has a population of near 100 thousand.

The increase presented to commissioners behind closed doors at a Jan. 27 legal meeting, that  would bring Richmond County's Richard  Roundtree’s salary from $110,000 to $127,000, was denied, today, after a closed meeting session of the Augusta Commission. The rise would have being slightly more than that of his predecessor Ronnie Strength, a Richmond County law officer of nearly 40 years who served three terms.

Richmond County has more than 200 thousand residents.
