AUGUSTA, GA - Black lawyers running for District Attorney and Probate Judge are not happy for the latest appointed judges in the Juvenile Court. The disproportional number of white judges do not reflect the community and especially the majority of the community incarcerated. They are demanding diversity in the Augusta Judicial Circuit.
Pamela James Doumar was named the newest member of the court, which handles truancy and family matters. Judges Jennifer McKinzie and Doug Flanagan will keep their posts.
The size of the court was reduced from four judges to three. Judges Willie Saunders, who ran against Chief Superior Court Judge Carlisle Overstreet in the July 31 primary, and Ben Allen will not return to the court for the four-year term that begins Oct. 1. Their terms were not renewed.
The appointment decisions are made by the eight Superior Court judges of the Augusta Judicial Circuit.
Diversity should include some Latino and Asian judges, too, if the Augusta Judicial Circuit should look like the communities which are under their jurisdiction.
