Latinos Support Same-Sex Marriage

Washington, DC  May 10, 2012 (By Amy Hinojosa) - The National Association of Hispanic Publications (NAHP, Inc.) joins the nation in applauding the bold statements made by President Obama in support of same-sex marriage.  A 2010/2011 poll on Latino views regarding LGBT issues, conducted by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the Gill Foundation, the Movement Advancement Project (MAP) and Bendixen & Amandi showed that 74% of Latinos support either marriage or marriage-like legal recognition for gay and lesbian couples.

Other studies have also shown that Hispanic same-sex couples adopt and raise children at higher rates than white, non-Hispanic same-sex couples. These findings underscore the importance for Hispanic families to have this level of support from the President of the United States.

NAHP President Zeke Montes said, "This is a giant step forward for civil rights, as the President openly acknowledged support for same-sex marriage. With this support, President Obama has liberated Americans who previously felt relegated to the shadows." He continues, "It is our hope that this is a positive step toward helping all individuals in America feel included and that this level of compassion will set the tone for upcoming civil rights issues in the country, especially with regards to the immigration debate."

The National Association of Hispanic Publications, Inc. (NAHP, Inc.) is a non-partisan trade advocacy organization representing the leading Spanish-language publications serving 41 markets in 39 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. NAHP was founded in 1982 to promote Spanish-language publications.
