Augusta Downtown Banner Program

AUGUSTA, GA (OOM) – The City of Augusta, the Downtown Development Authority (DDA), and the Augusta Convention & Visitors Bureau (ACVB) are proud to announce the installation of new Downtown Augusta banners and the implementation of the Augusta Temporary Banner Program.

New Downtown Augusta banners promoting the city center as a place for shopping, dining and arts are scheduled to be installed by June 1, 2012.  These banners will semi-permanently occupy Broad Street light poles when not in use by an organization or event.  The banners feature downtown architecture and iconic landmarks, as well as encourage action by guests to downtown.

“The Downtown Augusta banners will continue to improve the streetscape of downtown and make it more inviting to residents and visitors alike,” said DDA Executive Director, Margaret Woodard.

As part of an ongoing effort to enhance Downtown Augusta, the ACVB and the DDA helped the City create new temporary banner standards and guidelines which allow nonprofit organizations and events to place banners in designated zones through an approved application process.

With approved applications, eligible applicants may place temporary banners in chosen zones for a maximum of 30 days. The applicant is responsible for the cost and production of their banners and will pay a minimal fee per banner to the City for installation.

The temporary banner program and application is administered by Rob Sherman of the City of Augusta Planning & Development Department.  Representatives of the ACVB and DDA serve on the Banner Ordinance Advisory Committee which reviews banner applications and designs.  “The Temporary Banner Guidelines, approved by the Augusta Commission, streamlines the requests and process for temporary banners.  These new standards are user friendly and clearly identify the applicant and design criteria,” said Sherman.

Augusta Pride, Inc. is the first organization to apply and be approved to place temporary banners in the Broad Street zone from June 1 – June 30.  Augusta Pride, Inc. banners and the new Downtown Augusta banners will be installed simultaneously.  Around July 1st, the Augusta Pride, Inc. banners will be removed and the Downtown Augusta banners will occupy both sides of the Broad Street poles.

Anyone interested in applying for placement of temporary banners in Downtown Augusta can request the guidelines and application by contacting the City of Augusta Planning & Development Department, Rob Sherman at rsherman@augustaga.gov or calling 706-312-5050.
